PRINCIPAL'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

Principal’s Weekly Message

Week of December 11, 2017

Dear Mott Hall Families,

The focus of this school year is to emphasize Academics and Service, and to exemplify all students. As a school, we have already accomplished both measurable goals and meaningful goals. All students shine at Mott Hall. I am honored to say that this is also apparent to the outside community. This week I spoke with 2 colleague principals who commended our 8th grade students for providing tutoring to their elementary school students on Fridays.  One principal shared, “Your students are so well mannered, role models for our students and helpful to our teachers.  Thank you for sending them to our school.”  What a proud moment for Mott Hall!

Our main bulletin board is now adorned with the names of our First Quarter Honor Roll Recipients. What a privilege to bestow this great honor on our students.  Congratulations to them, their families and teachers! Students will be honored at our Holiday Concert next week.  We look forward to honoring more members next marking period.

On Friday December 1st, our scholars participated in a Poetry Slam.  What a proud moment! Two of our 7th grade students won the competition.  Congratulations Luna Ulterio and Jerermy Rosario!

There will be a PTA Holiday Dinner Dance on Friday, December 15th.  The PTA needs volunteers to chaperone and support by bringing a dish.  We would really like you to join us for this very special event.  It is going to be fun!  We will have food, dinner, music and a contest.  Please contact Ms. Moran for more information or to share your support (participation or food).

A very special thank you to our PTA for fundraising and donating a microwave for our staff lounge.  We are so grateful!

Principal’s Message Week of October 20, 2017

Dear Mott Hall Community,

Hope you have enjoyed your week and have a wonderful weekend with family and friends!

This week, we kicked-off our Breakfast with the Principal with a roundtable discussion in the Principal’s Office.  Our agenda included school communication structures, goal-setting and an introduction to many school initiatives: advisory curriculum, math counts, school band, chess, academic mentoring programs and scholarship opportunities.  It was a great opportunity to dialogue, share ideas, answer questions and celebrate September and October successes!

On Student Ambassadors represented our school at the Annual District 6 Middle School Fair.  Our scholars proudly talked about their school, our curriculum, programs and learning opportunities.  We are grateful for their commitment! Their passion motivated many families to visit our school for a tour on Friday, October 19, 2017.  Our next school tours are October 23rd and October 27th. Invite family members or friends who are interested in attending to call the school to make arrangements to join a tour.

This week we sent progress reports home with students to share your child’s academic performance thus far.  Our first semester will come to a close on November 8th. Student report cards will be prepared.  You will have the opportunity to receive and discuss your child’s performance at Parent Teacher Conferences on November 30, 2017.

Do not miss our Parent Workshop Series Kick-off on Tuesday, October 24th at 5:30 PM and Friday, 10:30 AM.  The same workshop will be offered at different times to best accommodate our families.  The workshop is focused on “How to Prepare for Parent Teacher Conferences.”  Flyers will be sent home on Monday.

We are delighted to share that Mott Hall has been selected to participate in a Citywide Initiative to increase diversity in Specialized High Schools by offering Kaplan Test Sophistication and by administering the SHSAT Exam in our school on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.  Our students will not have to travel to take the exam like in past years.  Our Scholars will take the exam in their school, where they are comfortable, supported and familiar with our environment.

On Monday, October 30th, our Scholars will participate in Character Day!  Students will be able to come dressed as a character from a book, film, or show.  We will be sending flyers with guidance regarding costumes.

Have a great week!

Principal’s Message September 29, 2017

Dear Mott Hall Families,

The school year has been off to a great start!  We welcomed our Scholars with much excitement and our Dean and Teachers have met with students to share our school expectations and new initiatives.  Our 6th graders are now acclimated, our 7th graders are learning about our high school process and our 8th graders are beginning to focus on the next step of their academic journeys.  We are all doing well and getting into our back to school routine!

Our “Dads Take Your Child to School” event went very well! Many Dads and relatives joined us for breakfast, speeches focused on the role and inspiration, Dads and male relatives provide.  Our Dads toured our school!

This week, we hosted our Curriculum Night and Information Fair.  Parents received information and applications to participate in opportunities offered by some of our partnerships (SASF. Music, NDI, Chess, Fordham STEP).  Parents attended teacher presentations and were given their child’s program to follow throughout the night.

On Monday, October 2, our Mott Hall Families will begin a Hurricane Maria Relief Effort to support Puerto Rico. A letter was sent home with information on the items we will be collecting.

We will be beginning our Afterschool Chess Program on Monday, October 2, 2017.  Contact the main office if you are interested in an application.

The Mott Hall School in collaboration with MS 278 will be hosting a HS Fair on October 5, 2017. Many top NYC schools will be joining us. Families will have the opportunity to speak to members of many schools in one place.  It will take place at MS 278 located on 421, 219th Street, a 5:00 PM.  All 7th and 8th grade families are welcome and encouraged to participate!

We expect high academic standards for each scholar. Be certain to communicate with your child and the school with any concerns.

PupilPath has now been updated for the 2017-2018 school year. You may access Pupilpath from our school website. If you have any issues, please contact Parent Coordinator Moran.

Have a good week.

Principal De Los Santos-Pena
